Annual flu shots are the most important measure to prevent influenza and its severe complications such as getting hospitalised.

Flu shots are recommended for all people over 6 months of age. Flu shots are free for:
– People aged over 65 years
– Children aged between 6 months to under 5 years
– Medically at risk groups (eg, severe asthma, diabetes, heart disease etc)
– Pregnant women
– Aboriginal people

During the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been reduced circulation of influenza virus and overall lower numbers of people getting flu shots compared previous years.

With the return of international travel, and borders reopening, a return and resurgence of influenza is expected in Australia in 2022.

Some Northern Hemisphere countries have seen a concurrent surge of influenza and COVID-19 activity. Vaccination is the most important measure to prevent influenza and its complications.

All COVID-19 vaccines can be co-administered (given on the same day) with an influenza vaccine.
